Fishing

Of course we love our anglers! We don’t call Whipray “Paradise Surrounded by Fish” for no good reason.

We are just minutes from the best salt water fly fishing flats in the world,

eliminating at least an hour’s boat ride every day just to come from the nearest village to get to your fishing grounds and with Daniel Cabral as your guide and teacher, along with the other well accomplished guides, life is good.

Daniel is one of Belize's top permit guides, and as such is a great source of information about the area. Having Daniel around makes fishing out of Whipray an experience you will never forget. The permit fishing is excellent and there are few places that offer better shots at this challenging fish. Several of the permit flats are only a five minute boat ride away from the island.

This is your classic permit setting for those who love to wade to their fish.

Your guide will pole you along the pristine flats until fish are spotted. You'll then be asked to quietly slip out of the boat and slowly wade toward the fish to get the best possible shot at them.

Daniel will take you to spots known only to him, some of the best fishing you will find anywhere. If you want Permit, Tarpon, Bonefish, Yellowtail, Snapper, King Mackerel, Barracuda, or Grouper, they are all here. Check here for a complete, as complete a list as grown-ups toys could be, list of gear to start your adventure.

Surrounded by deep, blue water, the healthy sand and turtle grass flats of the area are home to some of the largest permit found anywhere. A number of the nearby mangrove islands also hold good numbers of tarpon that can range in size from 20 to over 70 pounds. Schools of bonefish can occasionally be found in some areas of the cayes for those anglers interested in pursuing the elusive grand slam. This area of Southern Belize is blessed with a wide range of fishing contexts, including extensive saltwater flats, mangrove islands, the largest Barrier Reef in the Western Hemisphere, and a plenitude of backcountry rivers and lagoons found along the mainland coast. There are few places in the Caribbean that offers a greater variety of fishing locations than Southern Belize and the waters of Placencia.

Whipray Caye

can accommodate up to eight rods at a time, which makes it ideal for small groups looking for a unique and intimate setting. The cabanas, while basic, are comfortable. Don't expect posh because it isn't here. Fishing is. Hammocks on the veranda invite weary anglers to stop and rest while offering the perfect place to watch the sun set on another day in Permit Paradise.

If that doesn't suit you, the thatched roof bar will. It's a wonderful place to have a cold beer and dissect the day's events while tying up a few of Daniel's special Merkins or shooting a game of darts. Daniel is certain to add to the comedy.

Guides fish from 23-foot Mexican super pangas. Quality rental gear is scarce in Placencia and at the lodge, so anglers are encouraged to bring all applicable equipment and flies with them. You can find a complete list of what to bring here.
